macromedia players flash : continuous download of Flash Player

Pea-Jay
6/23/2006 1:14:09 AM
This has been going on for quite sometime and I've just never found any
solution. On sites with Flash it asks me to download the player. I have the
player already, but I download it anyway. The box on the Flash site shows that
yes, I do have Flash installed now. Then I go back to the site that uses Flash
and I'm back to the start - please download Flash Player.

I can't understand why if it's on my computer, why the site keeps asking me to
download it again, yet it shows I do have it on my computer.

I started to use Macromedia Flash 8 Training from the Source, James English,
and needed to play Flash in one of the tutorials. It sent me to the download
site. I downloaded, shows the Flash movement in the sample box that if you have
Flash you will see it in the box. I go back to the Flash site and once again -
wants me to download Flash.

So it's just a continuous circle with no end.

Would anyone have ANY idea at all why something like this would happen? Any
suggestions would be appreciated. I don't know what else to try.

I didn't realize this was a wide-spread issue. I actually (originally) posted
in another Flash forum and about 3 people (I think - not viewing it right now)
responded with the same problem but directed me here to the Flash PLAYER forum.
Didn't realize there was one.

In the other forum someone mentioned to specifically download Flash Player 6
because the new version (whatever that is) is what is causing these problems.

I downloaded it, and I went to this Flash page with all these Flash sites on
them: http://www.chooseindia.com/coolflashsites.html and so far I'm able to
view the Flash without a problem.

We'll see if this works for ALL the pages I was not able to view.

And let's see....................http://www.ahlrates.com/players/ that is
where Flash player 6 is.

So try that and see if it works for you!!
Pea-Jay

I'm not sure if Adobe participates in these forums or not. Probably not, huh?
We're all just going on our own here! :(

I was told that version 6 is the original player that installed with windows,
so the newer version is reacting this way - wanting the continual download.

Now, it seems to have worked for me and one other person, so why it's not
working for you, I am sorry. I can't make any more suggestions.

I've tried some of the Flash pages I could not view before and they are all
working, but that's not to say that I may come across the ones that I crossed
paths with earlier on and they may still not work. It could have something to
do with each individual site.

Did you try these various sites and see if you can view Flash on them? For
example, go here: http://www.10minuteflash.com/examples.html and when you click
on the 1, 2, 3 example sites, are you able to view them? or does your system
require you download FP again, for the gazillionth time! Sheesh! I know it's
so frustrating.

So far just installing Flash 6 has solved this issue for several people. I
never UNinstalled the players, but merely installed them.

Now, did you try REBOOTING your computer? That may help too. Whenever new
software is added to your computer, it's always a good idea to reboot.

Hi Everyone...

Okay....Forget all the technical stuff.....Just redownload macromedia
flashplayer 6...It is the old version that came with most of our computers. It
was what was working before you downloaded the newest version. You don't have
to do anything else. The address to find the old version#6 is:

Bad luck for me! I've followed the inststruction to unistall current version ->
restart pc -> install v6.0 player -> restart pc and tested, not working for me
(website tested www.nba.com). I also update a security patch to this v6.0 from
microsoft. Not working for me :(

Any other suggests???

how much inconvenience can I endure from Adobe Flash?

Plenty.

Will not integrate with IE.

I have done EVERYTHING.

Can only get it to work with Netscape.

Oh whoa......I'm so sorry you two are having problems. Here I started the
thread because I was unaware ANYONE else was having problems and was hoping
SOMEONE would listen, as this has been an issue for literally months!

The solution for me and others was just downloading the OLD version of the
Flash Player. I was amazed that it was that easy!

I have no solutions because I'm just a Flash Player user, not programmer or
geek.

I can only hope that someone who really knows this stuff can step in and
possibly help you with other issues that may be going on which doesn't allow
your Flash Player to work.

Sorry I can't help.

And I thought that I was the only one... Guess, I'm really not going psycho.
My newer version WMP doesn't work either (I can get the old, crappy version WMP
2 to work, though), ever since this whole flash thing (it started MONTHS ago).
I don't know if they could be connected. I'm completely computer illiterate.

But not being able to play videos on Youtube is killing me!

Any help would be appreciated! :)

Well, I wish someone who knows how to fix this permanently would find this
thread. I have just asked so many people, and then I thought THIS forum would
be the one place to find answers, and yet............still no answers. I have
been doing this for MONTHS!

I can't view YouTube either. I get this every time: Hello, you either have
JavaScript turned off or an old version of Macromedia's Flash Player. Get the
latest flash player.

YEAH RIGHT! THE NEW VERSION SUCKS as bad as the old one! One can't play
anything now without the new version -- but it does not work! And then every
page one goes to it wants you to download the new version AGAIN. I even get
the message on the Flash Player page that I already have it. REALLY!!!
Could'a fooled me!

Well, we can only hope that someone has this issue resolved and will find this
thread.

Well that's good! I really wish this whole issue would be fixed already. I get
that same message on youtube and downloading flash doesn't change anything. I
can't take it anymore!! I don't know what to do? :(

And I think I just screwed up more...

Now, I can't even get the games to show up on addictinggames.com. My brother
is going to kill me!? Anyway I can get at least that portion back? I guess I
shouldn't have uninstalled all the flash programs and then reinstalled them. I
hate this!

Sounds like the problem is you stuffing about with things, rather than flash
itself.. especially as you say there are also problem in windows media
player. Sounds like your PC setup is screwed.

I'm actually AGAIN having this issue. I hate this. And apparently Adobe
doesn't give a rat that people are having these problems.

Problem is, it seems okay with the version of 6, but then you go to a website
that says you need a newer version to view the website, so you're back to
downloading a newer version in order to view anything. So it's hopeless to
have 6 because most flash sites now require higher versions.

So I'm back to uninstalling, reinstalling, uninstalling, reinstalling,
clicking on install flash player, being told I have version 9 installed, going
back to a flash site and it says "install and update newer version of flash to
view this site," so we do it all over again.

I'm about ready to put my fist through my computer and hope it reaches ADOBE!
But I'm a girl, so I don't use fists -- only think about it. LOL

So I can't view video. Strangely enough, there was a day when I had NO
PROBLEMS with Flash Video Player.

What happened? They upgraded, web pages required the upgrade, and the upgrade
SUCKS, so no one can view the web pages.

Makes no sense to me at all!

The thing is, I'm not the only one to discover this flash problem with the WMP
player problem. I did some searching on the internet and plenty are having the
same problem. Like I said, I don't know if they are linked or not, but the
problem that was named on here fits my problem exactly. I did some unistalling
and reinstalling and nothing seems to work. I've been asking people for months
about ways to fix this and some either have my problem and the others think I'm
crazy. I think it's just time for me to get a laptop. I just hope the money I
put into that does not result in these problems...

im having a very similar problem and its totally pissing me off! i just dont
understand what happened or why im having the problem. i get this exact message:

"Explorer has caused an error in FLASH9B.OCX.
Explorer will now close.

If you continue to experience problems, try restarting your computer."

..w..t..f.. i've restarted the damn thing hella times and nothing changed. i
even downloaded and uninstalled a whole bunch of other crap just to see if it
would somehow help but it didnt! can someone please help me with this..?
Pea-Jay
12/8/2006 8:24:07 PM
No, it's not your PC setup! I'm tired of hearing it's EVERYTHING BUT FLASH!
IT IS FLASH!
I have top of the line Sony Vaio computer system, AND I always used to play
videos and flash and everything on them.

When Flash changed to a different media player, it all started, but the
problem is NOW all the web pages with Flash require a higher version of the
player in order to view their pages, and so you can't view it on the old
version 6, and you can't view it on the new version 7, 8, 9, 11 whatever,
because of this glitch that is happening with the new version!!!

I have had a computer GENIUS uninstall and REinstall my Flash and do
everything possible to get it working, and he can't get it working!

It's FLASH MEDIA PLAYER and there is a problem with it that Adobe doesn't CARE
to address!!

For me it's been going on for months! It's frustrating because only a few are
having the problem, so the rest of the world (including Adobe) doesn't give a
rat! As long as THEIR flash media is working!

I have uninstalled properly through the web site (the uninstall site :
http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_14157 and
REinstalled and even uninstalled and reinstalled
http://www.ahlrates.com/players/ Flash 6, but the problem, and I reiterate, is
FLASH because most sites require a newer version than 6 to play their Flash, so
consequently one is back to REinstalling the newer version, and REinstalling
the newer version and REinstalling the newer version...........CONTINUOUSLY and
yet never get to see the flash on the page. I only see the Flash on the Adobe
page which by the way tells me I already have Flash 9 installed. NO DUH!

Personally, I don't think it's your computer. I ALWAYS used to run Flash
Media Player and watch ALL video and ALL flash everywhere on the web. It all
started with one of the updated versions, after 6.

Even when I installed 6 again, I was able to see more video and Flash than I
had seen before; however, most ALL sites now require a NEWER VERSION of Flash
Media Player, so at that pont then you are back to REinstalling the higher
version and then once again back to the PERPETUAL download! and Adobe site
saying "version 9.0 is installed" or whatever and at that point you see the
flash on the adobe site, but never see the flash on any other site, AND if you
return to the Adobe site, it's back to NO FLASH can be seen! Reinstall,
uninstall, Reinstall, uninstall, Reinstall, uninstall, Reinstall, uninstall,
Reinstall, uninstall, Reinstall, uninstall, Reinstall, uninstall, Reinstall,
uninstall, Reinstall, uninstall. Perpetual, continual, continuous, eternal
download and never get to see the Flash on the web!

Well, hopefully someone will come to our rescue. So far Adobe is not doing
that, that's for sure! So it's already been MONTHS, maybe we'll have to wait

And what a fundamental error message! LOL Like we all don't know to REBOOT,

reinstall! Sheesh! ADOBE! are you even there? Macromedia used to solve all
problems all the time. Adobe does nothing since they purchased Macromedia. I

Ok, wow.. what a strange cure for the itch. After a whole lot of truely
unneeded trouble I finally found that the solution was obvious. The last thing
I remember doing was downloading an episode of Outlaw Star and after it told me
that it wouldnt play for some stupid reason is when all the suffering began.
The problem (i guess) was that RealPlayer's volume was lowered to nothing, and
since I dont even use my RealPlayer (at all) was why I never thought of
checking there. I doubt this will be your issue as well, but I wish for you the

So, here it is. I have had this problem on my Mac Powerbook and also on my
brand new Dell laptop.

On my Mac in particular, it's pure insanity. I'm asked to install the latest
version, so I do. Go back to the site, it still says I have to install it. I
check the half-assed support from Adobe. Even though I downloaded and
installed version 9, it says I have version 7 installed. I install again.
Tells me the install was successful, but still says version 7. I download the
Flash Player uninstaller, run it, reboot my machine, and install version 9.
Adobe's site tells me yet again that I have version 7. I have installed this
about 20 times, rebooted, uninstalled, all of it, over and over.

On my PC, I installed it, and it tells me I have Flash Player 9 installed.
Okay, but then when I go to a site that requires Flash Player, it tells me I
need it and I don't have it installed. Same process, over and over.

Fact of the matter is, I know my way around computers and software. I have
poured over all of Adobe's documentation and done everything that they've
recommended over and over. The real truth is that it's not the users, though
Adobe might just blow it off that way, because

ADOBE DOESN'T CARE ABOUT YOU. THEY ARE A CORPORATION THAT WILL GLADLY TAKE
YOUR MONEY, BUT DON'T FIND THEMSELVES RESPONSIBLE TO ENSURE QUALITY.

Ever since they bought out Macromedia, it's been a sad state of affairs. I
too hope that someone finds this thread and says to themselves "Hey, maybe we
should find a solution for these people, since we screwed up." However, this
is not a new issue, so apparently they just don't really care.
Pea-Jay
12/10/2006 11:41:17 PM
Wow -- I'm just going to SECOND THAT MOTION!!! I totally agree and have done
everything you have had to do, all to no avail.

Here all the time I thought it was just ME and MY computer and MY Flash, come
to find out it's more widespread than we realized -- and that Adobe cares to
address.
Pea-Jay
12/11/2006 2:37:04 AM
Okay, I 'm not understanding what all that has to do with the fact that with
Flash 6 version I was able to view everything everywhere anytime and never had
a problem. But since sites are now setting up their videos and Flash to only
play with the "latest version" of Flash, then when one downloads the latest
version, one also loses being able to see any videos or Flash pages.

So take YouTube.com, for example, I get this: You either have JavaScript
turned off or an old version of Macromedia's Flash Player. Get the latest flash
player.

So, JS is NOT turned off. So now let me go download AGAIN. Takes me to the
Adobe site. The image on their page is not moving, so according to the page I
do NOT have Flash installed. So I download it. For the gazillionith time I
get this message: Version 9,0,28,0 installed successfully and I see the Flash
moving on their page.

Reboot.

I go back to YouTube.com As soon as I enter the page I get this:
Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Macromedia's
Flash Player. Get the latest flash player.

So see? it's perpetual!

uninstall_flash_player.exe Okay, so I'm searching for this and my computer is
not coming up with anything. But I went under System32 > Macro > Flash >
UninstlFl application and clicked on that and it said are you sure you want to
uninstall Adobe Flash Player and I said OH MY GOSH YES GET RID OF IT! :D

But I see it's all still there. So I'll reboot AGAIN. I think I'm wearing

Pea-Jay
12/11/2006 4:02:21 AM
Well, I uninstalled it again, and this time I went everywhere to uninstall --
through Systems32, the control panel and my program files on C drive to make
sure it was NO WHERE on my computer.
I also UNINSTALLED REALPLAYER.

I now am viewing YouTube.com w/o a problem.

We'll see how long that lasts.

I think next time a site asks me to download Real Player I won't do it. May
have been a conflict, because I've uninstalled Flash Player a gazillion times
and it has never worked.

As soon as I uninstall Real Player, and Flash, and reinstall, it is now
working.

I hope that was the problem.

Thanks for all your suggestions.

I'm definitely going to have a read! I just hope that was really the total of
this issue. It sure got resolved quickly after getting rid of that player, but
I can only hope that's all it is. So thanks for getting me to looking around
at my system, etc etc. When I saw the Real Player I thought, you know? I don't
like that thing anyway, didn't even know it was on my computer, and what the
heck, I'm going to UNINSTALL every single dang player on this thing and start
over!

I might add though, come to think of it, because I wrote it down, that while I
was in there I saw an update 7 along with update 6 of the J2SE Runtime
Environment 5.0 I figured I didn't need both of them so I deleted 6.

I don't know what that is, and I know sometimes one update will depend on
another, but at this point I was ready to try anything.

Ya think that was anything that could have helped the situation?

Ok .. so after you uninstall, does it still think you have Flash Player 7
installed?

On your PC, what is the "it" that tells you you have Flash Player 9
installed? What site is it that requires flash that doesn't think you have
it? Where is your flash player ocx? Do a search on your whole hard disk
for "*flash*.ocx" and see what you find.

On my Pc I find:
I have Flash9b.ocx in c:\windows\system32\macromed\flash (that the one
registered and being used)
I also have in C:\i386 a Flash.ocx (6r79), Flash8.ocx (8r2) and swflash.ocx
(4r7)
I have Flask9.ocx (9r16) in my KewBee Plugin Switch area (I haven't used
that program much yet though .. it might be worth your while trying as it
swaps different flash version ocx's in and out .. it might fix your
problems)

In my registry in
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{1171A62F-05D2-11D1-83FC-00A0C9089C5A}, the
InpocServer32 key is set for
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\Flash9b.ocx"
Also in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000}the
InpocServer32 key is set for
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\Flash9b.ocx"
there a couple of other places that specify the flash ocx that are all
looking at the correct file.

What is the situation on your PC?

Jeckyl

for a start, most of those should be in the macromed/flash folder inside
system 32

and you shouldn't have so many different flash ocx's there

that's probably why its getting confused.

try uninstalling, rebooting, killing off any *flash*.ocx on you PC,
rebooting, and then installing again.

it looks like your pc is screwed with too many flash ocx's living there ..
no wonder it doesn't know what its got and what it doesn't.

[quoted text, click to view]

Probably because flash 6 was installed nicely and things are screwed on your
machine since then.

It may not really be a flash issue (if it was, then noone woudl be able to
wathc flash movies with the new player)

its most likely something gone screwy on your PC (whether or not that is
your fualt, of adobe's, or microsoft's or something else or some weird
combination)

There are a lot of people out there who refuse to install real player .. its
a good decision not to have it. Look for 'real alternative' and install

Yeah, I've never had real player installed, and I've run the Flash uninstaller
on both my systems SEVERAL times. I have rebooted more times than I can count,
and still no solutions. I never had any of these problems before Adobe took
over the Flash technology, so I will assume that they are pushing things out
and leaving consumers to deal with their nightmares and figure it all out for
themselves, which is typical of Adobe in general (as in Adobe Bridge issues).
So, I have nothing but problems with no solutions. I appreciate everyone
trying to work together to solve each others' problems, but isn't this
something for Adobe to figure out and solve? Their solutions just aren't
working, and they actually PAY people to figure this out. Good use of the
corporate dollar, apparently.

ok it worked for 4 days then crashed when my wife did something so on more
research I found it will never work with ie7 so lets all give up. Actually
there are ton of threads on this. "By Design" Microsoft has removed
almost all of it's previous functionality in order to add the new tabbing
system. Flash players and many standard addins no longer work. Microsofts
answer for this is to disable and uninstall all addins and some how thing the
internet is going to remove all multimedia. The best aswer for you is to
uninstall ie7. You system will revert back to IE6 and things will all work
again. However, in many cases services installed with ie7 and not uninstalled
with the ie7 uninstaller will also cause problems. The only solution to this
is to re-install service pack2. Make sure any time you are prompted about
overwriting a file that is newer than the one in sp2 that you choose to
overwrite the new file. Things like network connections and other problems
will persist if you don't.

Please .. grow up and stop spamming this nonsense about IE7 not working with

Look at the thread I posted earlier: Run the flash uninstaller, reboot,
search you harddrive for any remaining *flash*.ocx and delete them, reboot,
reinstall flash from the website. If its still not working, look in your
registry for any *flash*.ocx and ensure that any references are for the
correct version of flash ocx in the correct area (usually
c:\windows\system32\macromed\flash) .. post here with your results and we'll
see what we can work out from there.

I've seen some advice for PCs, but little to nothing for Macs. When I install
Flash 9 Player, it tells me it's successful and then proceeds to tell me I have
7 installed. No amount of deleting, uninstalling, reinstalling, or rebooting
has done anything at all to change this. Even when I run the uninstall, it
still says I have version 7 installed. You tell me.

I'm confused why people are talking about Internet Explorer 6 and 7 now
instead of Flash. Flash has been the problem. What does IE have to do with
it? And......
Actually, I don't think this is a good solution, reinstalling the old version
of Flash. Why? Because many Flash sites are designed to work only with newer
versions of Flash. So consequently, when you are using Flash 6 and you go to a
site that has been designed for Flash 8 and above will still require you
install a newer version before you can view the Flash. (like a lot of the
videos I put on line on my website and my clients' sites -- I have the option
of installing for Flash 6 or 7 or Flash 8 and above -- I usually do it for the
newer versions because we all assume that everyone updates their software).

I also have been fighting this problem for several months. I finally have it
working. I removed Flash using the Flash Removal tool. I also manually removed
all flash*.ocx files. Then, I removed RealPlayer and all files associated with
Real. I then reinstalled Flash 9. Looks like Real may have been the problem
here. Keeping fingers crossed during the next several days.

LAME LAME LAME LAME LAME.

I have no Real Player on my system, nor have I ever. I uninstalled all Flash
Players and deleted all .ocx files, then reinstalled Flash player and it says
successfully installed v9, but when I go to ABC.com, it tells me that I have to
have the latest version of Flash to watch. Booooooo to Flash and Booo to Adobe.
Pea-Jay
12/13/2006 9:03:30 PM
Oh, gosh, that's unbelieavable! I just thought I'd check out your ABC.com to
see if I had the same problem still, but I don't. Removing Real Player from my
computer seemed to have solved this mystery.

I think it comes down to a compatibility problem somewhere. I had decided I
was going to remove every player on my computer and start over, including
Javascript.

So I started with removing an old version of JS (v 6) and just left v 7. Then
I removed Real Player. I gave that a try and it worked.

Maybe you should try removing ALL players, including Quicktime. I don't know
what other ones there are, but I think this has to do with a compatibility
issue. I think Flash may want to TAKE OVER the computer and media on your
computer and is thus not running if other players are there.

I don't know. I'm certainly no computer expert here, but I figured for me it
was worth a try just to delete everything and start over, go to my favorite
site and see what it needed to play it, and then download that. And just go
from there.

I never used to be able to see YouTube either, and now I can.

So why don't you try deleting all the players on your system. Sure can't hurt
anything. And then as you go to a website, when it says "download whatever
version of whatever" then just download that player and see if you can see the
site.

Then try it with other sites. Maybe you'll find the one that is messing up
the whole deal.

Just a thought. Worked for me to do it that way.

Hey danceboogie8 (and anyone else),

I wanted to warn you that buying a new laptop will probably not resolve the
problem, this is because I bought a brand new lapotop (a good one by Sony)
about 4 months ago, and I also have the flash problem. I think it has nothing
to do with one's computer, because a year ago I had a regular simple desktop
computer and I had no problems with the flash. Just as everyone is saying, ever
since there was that new upgrade for the Flash Player 9, the whole Flash
function doesn't work at all on any sites(wether it's watching videos on
Youtube, a video on MSN.com, etc...). This is ruining the whole fun of being on
the internet.

I followed Pea-Jays help, with uninstalling the new version and getting the
old one (flashplayer 6) and it worked for a day but the next day I keep getting
Messages "You need the latest Version of Flash", and when I install the new
one, I don't see the "installion movie" which means the installation wasn't
successful.

So, I'm with everyone else, very frustrated and Adobe really should fix this
soon!!!

Does anyone else agree with what I said?

P.S. I'm not having any problems (at least not yet) with my WIndows Media
Player, it has always been working correctly. It' s only the Flash thing that
doesn't work. I have Internet Explorer 7 (but I don't know if the version # of

solution. The thing is, my Windows Media Player (the only player I have on my

I have had this problem on several sites, including YouTube and MySpace, and
just to let you know, don't expect any help from these sites. They don't care
about this problem any more than Adobe does. I have contacted Adobe and all
these sites and have either received no response or a form response which is
cut-and-pasted from a FAQ that I've already read. It's really just a complete
disconnect and with the advancements in technology, you'd think that they'd
somehow get it together BEFORE releasing and incorporating this technology.

Yes, I was the one that mentioned Java. I went back to look so I could tell
you exactly what I did. And again, I really know nothing about this so I may
be way off base, but the steps I took allowed me to once again see FLASH and
YOUTUBE and other video and Flash sites.

I decided to delete ALL MY PLAYERS: FLASH, QUICKTIME, REAL PLAYER, and even my
JAVA RUNSCRIPT JUNK. I just was going to start over and delete everything to
do with flash and video.

Everytime you go to a website that uses flash or plays video it will tell you
that you can't play it BECAUSE...... and that you need the lastest version of
[quoted text, click to view]

So I figured, then fine, I'll delete EVERYTHING and start over one step at a
time and just download what I need for any specific site and see where the
problem starts again.

So the first thing I noticed was two versions of J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0,
an update 6 and an update 7. I know that there can be conflicts with software,
a lot of them and all the time. I also know that some updates depend on the
update before that. But at the point WHO CARES! LOL I couldn't see anything
anyway.

So first in line TO GO was the J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6. Then
the next to go was REAL TIME PLAYER and QUICKTIME PLAYER.

I had not even UNinstalled the Flash Media Player at that time because I knew
I already had the latest update -- and had updated it a GAZILLION TIMES!!! :D :D

I then went back to YOUTUBE.COM and was so surprised to SEE VIDEO!
I then went to a FLASH site and SAW FLASH! It has worked ever since for me.

So I can't recommend someone do exactly what I did, but I figure what is the
harm in deleting ALL YOUR MEDIA PLAYERS -- quicktime, flash, vlc, realtime....I
think that's all I had on my computer. And of course the Javascript.

You can download ALL that again without a problem. So why not clean all that
stuff off and then just start over???

So that is the solution that worked for me. I don't want to just tell you
that IS THE SOLUTION because it may not be, but that is what worked for me.
Maybe it's worth a try???

reinstalled java and I don't have realplayer. Yet when ever i go to ANY flash
site it just tell's me that I need a newer version blah blah blah. The funny
thing, though, is that I can still see certain flash movies, like the featured
one on youtube or I can play online game's or watch movies, only the thing
appears at the bottem. Another funny thing is that I ALWAYS have to use the

Flash player activex hooks itself into the IE browser. If there is a
problem with the borwse, or other plugins, or the operating system, they can
all impact on whether the player works or not. Flash Player in itself is
pretty good .. the problems are with what happens when you attempt to
install it in an operating system that may already have problems (eg
viruses, malware, conflicting applications).

And uninstall and reinstall of the brwoser may indeed help.

Also going back to an older version of Flash player (if you can get it
working) is a good start .. as from there you may be able to reinstall a
later player and have success a second time.

Solving problems with flash in IE by simply not using IE is not really a
solution. You might as well suggest that the answer is simply not to use
Flash Player at all.

This sounds like yet another anti-microsoft-er or firefox fanatic trying to

You're not really forced to .. its just that you've not yet managed to come
up with a solution top your problem.

Not using IE will not solve the problem, just avoid it.

If you're happy with that, fine. But it really isn't a solution .. and it
is possible that whatever the problem REALLY is will sneak up and bite you
again in the future, because your problem is not yet fixed.

It is still worth pursuing a real solution if you can, and good to know
using Firefox is a fallback position for you until/if you find the answer.

Removing Real Player worked for a while, but the problem has returned. I

But, came up empty. I still do not have Real installed but the problem

If you are having an issue installing the Flash Player with Windows Internet
Explorer, but you can install it with other browsers on the same machine, you
may have a damaged system registry or incorrect permissions in the registry:

To find out more about this issue, see Troubleshooting the system registry

or manipulating the registry incorrectly can result in serious system damage
which may require re-installation of the operating system. If you are not

You may have found the solution to your problem. But, since I am new at this
particular cite, I thought I would share what worked with me so that maybe it
will help and work for others. The only thing that I know is that this did
work for me. I was about to pull my hair out. Everything that I tried did not
seem to work. I even had the technicians of my virus protection/firewall to
help behind the scenes. And then I contacted Adobe for technical support who
ended up directing me to the support / forums. I continued to read the posted
messages along with the advice that was offered. Nothing seemed to work for me.
Of course, I began to get aggrevated. But, there was one message that stuck out
in my mind. That note informed that Flash Player was not Compatible with
Internet Explorer - even though it referred to some other issue or problem.
This seemed to make sense. So, let me tell you what worked for me. Again, it is
IE that is causing all of the numerous problems with not being able to download
Flash Player, etc. I am not sure of what has changed with Flash Player now that
may be causing this particular issue, but. . . So, I decided to go to another
web browser - like Netscape because on one occasion, I was having great
difficulty with IE and the technicians downloaded Netscape. I had no more
problems with Netscape, but of course, I like IE. So, I eventually went back to
IE and never thought about Netscape again, until now. I went to Netscape (with
all of the issues at hand) and decided to see if I could view many of the cites
that were provided in the Forums. Well, much to my surprise, all of the web
pages that required Flash Player seemed to work automatically - but only in
Netscape. I did not even have to download Flash Player while in Netscape. See
if this works for you and pass it own to everyone if you have success. Some of
you may need to download the Flash Player while in Netscape, but I did not.
Good luck. I am so happy that something FINALLY worked. Maybe it will work for
you too and do not forget to pass it on - if it does happen to work for you
also. 2byoung

3. Right click on HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
4. Select Permissions
5. Select Advanced

I was interested in using the SubInAcL tool that was recommended to download.
I use Registry Pro, but maybe the one mentioned will solve other issues.

However, when I went to this page:

"download" anywhere for the SubInAcL tool??

I use norton internet security. Turned it back on without affecting the flash
player. Could view the all the sites. I only use IE7. I trialled firefox but it
messed up my regional settings in the control panel and I couldn't amend it,
once uninstalled everything worked fine. Why not select your prefered browser,
uninstall the rest and download the flash player again.

Well, I develop web sites so I need all the browsers I can get in order to
check web pages, as they view differently in different browsers.

I also use IE7 but that is the browser that is the problem for me (and AOL of
course because it uses IE).

Warning The following solution involves the Windows System Registry.
Editing or manipulating the registry incorrectly can result in serious system
damage which may require re-installation of the operating system. If you are
not comfortable editing the registry, then take your system to a professional.
If you choose to proceed, then it is essential that you create a complete
system backup and a Windows System Restore Point before proceeding. Adobe
Systems cannot be held responsible for damage resulting from this information.

***If you are not comfortable editing the registry, then take your system
to a professional.***

For information regarding this microsoft tool please read the following:

http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=fb1634cb

You can download the Microsoft tool, SubInACL and reset.cmd here:

http://www.supportflash.com/reset.zip

[bullet]
Download the ?reset.cmd? and the ?subinacl.exe? to the desktop
Close out all applications
Run the ?reset.cmd? file
It will open a DOS like terminal and start running through registry keys
It may take five to twenty minutes depending on the system
When it is finished it will say ?press any key to continue?
At this point you can download the latest Flash Player from here:
http://www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer

Basically my on my WinXP account, Admin, account can play videos on Youtube
w/out problem.
But my mother's account, which has Admin rights, Youtube videos do not play =>
"you do not have latest flash..."

I understand Windows Rights might be messed up and you suggest using the tool.
Well, I used the "uninstall Flash" tool from adobe site and removed it clean.
Then installed latest ver. of flash and it passed the installation test on
Adobe site. Now, at this point, I have good reason to believe Flash DID get
installed properly, correct?

Then this solution you suggest - resetting Win. admin right etc. ...is not a
solution to my problem?

Any alternative solutions, less dangereous? and more concrete?

My problem is that I cannot *install* Flash Player 9 and I think I have
narrowed down the cause as I explain in a separate thread I started: "Cannot
install Flash Player 9 w/ win98se"
http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/webforums/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=184&threadid=
1227050

At this point my question is whether there is a manual installer I can
download which does not depend on the browser and active X doing the
installing. Please see that thread for details.

All right, I've read it all, and at times it was getting really complicated.
I used partly your suggestions and partly my own ideas AND IT WORKED!!; here
is what I did:
I remembered that things went wrong after installing FP9, so I decided to go
back at FP8, which had been working fine with YouTube and other sites. So, I
did as suggested, used the exe uninstaller, reboot, removed (all=3) remaining
files from the flash folder in system 32, reboot again and installed version 8.
If you look it up in Google you will find it the cellars (=archives) of Adobe.
Let them figure it out first, so far FP8 works fine!

[Q]Let them figure it out first, so far FP8 works fine![/Q]

Until you go to another site that uses FP9 and asks you to upgrade to the
NEWEST version.
That's the problem. Then you're back to square one.
Some sites work with older versions of FP, others work with newer versions.
When I design something with Macromedia/Adobe Flash it will ask which players
I want it to use, and I don't remember the exact sequence, but something like
.... version 6 and below? version 7&8, version 9? most people will choose the
latest version and those are the sites that cannot be seen anymore with the FP9
(the latest version).

The thing that you all need to understand, is that it's not your computers..
It's a problem coming from ADOBE, they are the ones whom have messed it up. If
you are really struggling, and you are doing this through Internet Explorer,
then I advise you to find an install for firefox, this is the easiest way to
get it sorted, and will probably work for you best.

There are several different problems here. Some people have problems getting
Flash Player 9 to work but some, like me, are having problems getting it
installed. For those in my situation a stand alone installer would probably
solve the issue. I do not understand why Adobe do not provide this and I am
forced to use the installation page which does not work for me.

Yes, and my problem is that I have to install it a gazillion times and it only
works once on the Adobe site where it was installed. Flash plays, says
installation was successful. Yadda, yadda, yadda... Once off that page, it's
back to square one.

Thanks for your reply.

PLEASE NOTE: I do NOT suggest that you use this Microsoft tool unless you know
for sure that this is a permission issue with your registry and that you are
comfortable with editing the registry. This Microsoft tool has resolved
permision registry issues for many customers, but it may not be what you need.
I would suggest that you remove the Flash Players from all accounts on your
machine using the uninstaller from here:

http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_14157

After running the uninstaller, delete the following folder:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash

Next logged in as Administrator (NOT just a user with admin rights) and
install the latest Flash Player from here:

http://www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer

I have had the same problem and have tried everything possible, but it now
works and here is what I did... It used to occasionally work on my wife's
windows profile but once the computer was shut down it wouldn't work
again...Once again I used the adobe flash remover and restarted the system, I
then installed flash player 7 with a link that I got from these posts, I tried
to view you tube and was unable to view it and got the same old install flash
player 9 prompt. ..So as so many times before I clicked on the download now
link and installed flashplayer 9... I did not restart the system and went back
to you tube and for some reason it's working... It works on all the windows
profiles on my computer and it works after the computer has been shut down and
brought back up, which it did not do before... So if you've tried it all...
what can it hurt...

It appears that some screen savers (electric sheep is one) or programs look for
a "flash.ocx" instead of "flash9b.ocx" and this causes the problem.

SOLUTION:

Copy: "...windows/system32/macromed/flash/flash9b.ocx"
Paste: it as a copy of flash9b.ocx then...
RENAME: the COPIED FILE to "flash.ocx"
IMPORTANT: do not delete the original flash9b.ocx just make a copy of named
"flash.ocx"

This "fix" has worked for a lot of people that have programs or screen savers
that look for the original flash.ocx file which it can't find causing in some
cases for I.E. to close (or other programs) and the resultant error message.

Internet Explorer, but you can install it with other browsers on the same

I have a systems registry repair that I use all the time, so I can rule this
one out.

just have to accept that the old versions of Flash Player were fine, but the
new version sucks!

:grin;

I found a "FIX" posted on the forum "Flash Player 9 Update". I didn't have
enough guts to download and run it from the "FIX" link (zip file from the
donglefree URL) but read the Microsoft and Adobe technotes that were referenced
on the "FIX" page and followed those instructions, specifically, followed
Adobe's Flash Player TechNote "Download SubInACL from Microsoft to fix
permission issues that prevent the Flash Player Installation,
http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=fb1634cb" instructions
to the letter and it took a long time to run but Flash 9 player installed and
ran perfectly after that. So far, everything else is still working as well!

My situation was that I had uninstalled a demo version of Flash Pro 8 and
installed a licensed copy. After that, it no longer detected that I had a Flash
Player and I was prompted to download a player so I did, (Flash Player 9 by
default). After that I was hosed, I could uninstall but I could not register a
new player, any version, and get it detected. Using a different browser,
different user accounts, and a different Flash Player version was not an option
for me so I did everything Adobe said to do (including 200 reboots) in order
and eventually found the reference to this Adobe tech note in the forum and it
worked first time. Obviously, it probably won't fix everybody, but it
definitely fixed mine. I see it mentioned a few times in this forum thread so I
thought I would go ahead and let everyone know it worked for me.

Again, reference Adobe's Flash Player TechNote "Download SubInACL from
Microsoft to fix permission issues that prevent the Flash Player Installation,
http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=fb1634cb"

Hallo Leute,

Also Rechner neu formatiert, Win Xp Prof SP2 und neuesten Patches drauf. Half
alles nix.
Hatte ?brigends alle die hier erw?hnten Tips ausprobiert, half auch alles nix.
L?sung letztendlich: Bei IE6Sp1 ins Men?: Extras->Internetoptionen->
Erweitert->Browsing->

I did not even read anything past this message quoted below, so if someone
stated this already I apologize.

I did a search of my system and found that I had Flash8b.ocx & Flash9b.ocx in
the C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash folder. I decided to try unregistering
the Flash8b.ocx & registering the Flash9b.ocx. Once I did that and restarted
IE YouTube worked again.

Steps taken:
- Opened a Command Window (Start Menu > Run.. > Type "cmd" without the quotes
and click the OK button.
- Typed the following commands in the Command Window:
---------------------------------------
cd C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash
regsvr32 /u Flash8b.ocx
regsvr32 Flash9b.ocx
---------------------------------------
Closed all Internet Explorer Windows
Opened Internet Explorer and went to YouTube. Videos worked!

Hope this helps.

[q]Originally posted by: Newsgroup User
for a start, most of those should be in the macromed/flash folder inside
system 32

and you shouldn't have so many different flash ocx's there

that's probably why its getting confused.

try uninstalling, rebooting, killing off any *flash*.ocx on you PC,
rebooting, and then installing again.

it looks like your pc is screwed with too many flash ocx's living there ..
no wonder it doesn't know what its got and what it doesn't.

I was able to resolve this issue on Windows VISTA, this may also work for XP.

1. I downloaded and ran uninstall_flash_player.exe from this site, you need to
close IE7 because this EXE only seems to kill the first tab, if you have
multiple tabs open.
2. I Deleted everything EXCEPT flash.ocx in C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash
3. Opened up Programs and Features in the control panel(Add/Remove programs in
XP) and made sure neither Flash or Shockwave was installed.
4. Opened up Regedit and searched for Flash and Shockwave. and deleted any
keys I found relating to them.
5. Reboot
6. Installed flash from this site again
7. Watched some flash videos :)

That's pretty much what I've suggested before...

(using admin account)
uninstall
remove all traced of flash player ocx and folder from your hard drive and
from the registry
reinstall

Basically, if its not working, then something is screwed. . so if you wipe
it out completely (so there is nothing left to BE screwed) and reinstall,
there's a good chance it will work (as it does for the countless millions
who have no problems at all)

SOLUTION
This requires no reboot

- Close all browsers and MSN Messenger and anything else using Flash
- Install latest Flash ActiveX plugin if not already installed.
- Delete everything except Flash9b.ocx.
- Download and Install Flash v6 ActiveX here
http://www.ahlrates.com/players/Install%20Flash%20Player%206%20AX.exe
- Open Regedit and search for flash.ocx
- For each instance it finds (typically
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\Flash.ocx )
just change the filename to point to
Flash9b.ocx...C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\Flash9b.ocx

Thats it...latest version installed and working.....no reboot required
Old v6 installer appears to write the correct registry entries (pointing to
old file of course)
New installer breaks it again. :tounge;

Go here to verify what version of Flash Player ActiveX you have:
http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about
MSN Messenger Winks also work after this. :wink;
