Meet the Passive Active Team

Our latest cohort of interns have settled into the office and begun work on their project, Passive Active. We’ve asked each team member to tell us about their backgrounds, past projects, and aspirations. If your commute takes you across the Burnside Bridge, glance over at our headquarters and wave!

Polina Nenchev
Hello, my name is Polina. I was born and raised in Bulgaria – a country in Southeastern Europe – and came to the United States 12 years ago. In my free time, I like cooking, reading and mostly spending time with my family and friends. I also like walking and being in nature- anytime the weather is nice, I go for a walk with my daughter and husband. Some of the projects I have built at Epicodus are a Q&A board (built with JS Ember), Meal Tracker (built with Angular), CoffeeShop (built with Android SDK), and Welcome To The Band Site (built with Java). Some of my professional goals are to work as a mobile developer with a concentration in Android. Michael Schennum
Hi, my name is Michael Schennum (rhymes with denim). For the past 10 years I was a staff photographer at the Arizona Republic newspaper in Phoenix. If anyone has any photo or video questions let me know! I’m also an avid rock climber and hiker, and have been having a blast exploring Oregon in the last couple of months. I recently made a climbing workout app that can be found here.

Matt Rosanio
Hey, I’m Matt Rosanio. I grew up and went to school in Syracuse, NY, where I earned a degree in Aerospace Engineering. I moved out to Portland at the beginning of the year in hopes of pursuing a career in programming. When I’m not coding I like to go hiking, play guitar, read, and play video games. For the final week of our Android class, Ramon and I worked on a game called Deep Fish, which ended up being my favorite project! You can find it on the Google Play store here. As a developer, I’ve really enjoyed making Android apps more than anything else so far, and would really like to continue to develop a career path in that direction. You can find me online at:

Ramon de la Cruz
Hello, my name is Ramon. I grew up and went to school here in Portland. After getting my Master’s in Education, I left for China, kicking off a decade of work in professional education, which took me many, many places. Programming has always been something I’d been interested in, but I never really pursued it until last fall. I’ve learned a lot over the past six months, from Javascript to Ember to Android, but there is so much more yet to learn! I’ve created a handful of projects over the past few months, but nothing I’m prouder of than Deep Fish, a game Matt and I made for our final Android team project. Along with coding, I’m an avid consumer of media: books, TV, movies, video games, essentially any narrative delivery device. Here are a few places you can find me:

They are currently in the process of wireframing their app, laying out design concepts, and establishing a project timeline. Passive Active will be a step forward in fitness apps by suggesting new walking routes based on the number of calories the user wishes to burn and combining fitness data with data from Google Maps to help frequent walkers keep better track of their progress toward their goals. You can see the first draft of the project team’s wireframes below.
